“Balance movement and rhythm in the underlying shapes is paramount, and the use of texture, line and tool marks
is very important in my work”

"Put your projects in the hands of a master"

“My most successful work is a culmination of a number of ideas and feelings expressed as simply and directly as I can”

“I tend to use a 1/4” chisel to work with. Using it to draw lines into the stone with, helping to reveal and accentuate the form”

    Griffin at Trinity College Cambridge

I started carving at 13 years old with Rattee and Kett in Cambridge, during my school holidays. I showed promise and at 16 years old I was taken on as the first apprentice for 12 years. During my apprenticeship starting in 1981, I've worked on many of the UK's most prestigious buildings, giving me a thorough and invaluable grounding in carving skills and techniques.

This combination of top quality traditional and contemporary training (as a designer) makes me, I believe, unique in being able to field all the skills necessary to enable a carving project from research to completion at the highest standards.

"To become a master carver not only requires a raw natural talent and many years of practise, but above all the ability to develop these artistic skills using a variety of materials to recreate the various architectural styles used throughout the ages. Through his unique training and involvement with some of the most prestigious restoration projects and demanding new commissions, Andrew Tanser has reached the pinnacle of his craft and now ranks as one of the leading carvers and sculptors in the country." - Vic Franklin, Former Restoration Director of Rattee & Kett, 1999
